Kiosk Solutions - University Hospital Birmingham - Intranet, Internet & Email

Project:
Deployment of internet kiosks

Sector:
NHS

Target:
NHS Staff

The Requirement

The hospital required a secure solution for providing internet, intranet and email facilities to Trust employees who did not have access to a PC. As part of the overall e-Government agenda, the Department of Health has directed that public healthcare organisations must provide Internet, Intranet and E-mail facilities to all staff.

The Solution

Amatica delivered a magnetic card controlled Intranet kiosk system for staff use.

The system includes two kiosks with secure keyboard and trackball connected to a high capacity printer using thermal print technology. The magnetic card reader provides secure access to the Trust's intranet, using existing personnel ID cards used to control staff access to hospital premises. Withdrawing the card automatically causes the system to log out and flush all personal details from the kiosk cache.

The kiosk hardware is based on the tried and tested Archer kiosk, comprising Pentium class processor and kiosk controller, integrated IP65 keyboard/trackball and smart/magnetic card reader.

A wall mounted printer housing enclosing an A4 thermal printer completed a specification aimed at delivering field reliability and serviceability.

In addition to the kiosk hardware, software comprising a secure browser and Amatica's card reader control software was integrated into a combined screen saver and login.

The Outcome

The result is a totally secure kiosk system which allows staff to access University Hospital Birmingham's Intranet upon magnetic card insertion.
