Mobil Oil

The Requirement

All staff and visitors to Mobil's blending plant in Cheshire were required to undergo a basic health and safety check before entering the facility.

Health and safety training programmes for production workers and sub-contractors were undertaken by a full-time trainer and therefore costly and time consuming. For visitors, health and safety related messages displayed by a PC at reception were generally ignored. Mobil's health and safety record was at risk.

Mobil's health and safety advisor, Terry Duffy, realised both methods were ineffective and sought a more efficient replacement. Amatica suggested a combination of touchscreen PCs combined with interactive multimedia as a practical and effective solution to Mobil's problem.

The Solution

Amatica installed touchscreen enabled PC's at Mobil Oil's blending plant security lodge at the main works entrance and at the reception desk in the administration building. This ensured that the facility would be used by all visitors, employees and plant sub-contractors. Amatica also designed an online induction system. Cartoons and humour maintain higher levels of interest and spoken narrative overcomes any literacy limitations.

Employees and contractors previously inducted undertake an abridged version. An integrated Induction Audit System records individual names and dates of inductions, thereby providing an important audit trail in the event of an accident.

Staff responsible for Health & Safety, as well as reception, security and contractors site representatives were trained prior to going live in May 1996.

The Outcome

Everyone passing through the plant received an induction to Mobil's Health & Safety policy, ensuring its reputation for low accident rates remained intact. The cost of managing Health & Safety training has reduced, and the risk of accidents and resulting claims has been further reduced. And Mobil's message "Safety Is No Accident" is even stronger than ever.
